Solitary Dancer by Alicia Winski

  She’s a solitary dancer,
    her graceful steps echoing
    softly in an empty theatre
    designed and built for two

    She never knew
    she would be dancing
    solo for so long,
with never a song to be
    played for a lovingly
    choreographed duet…

She cries tears for the years
lost and gone by while waiting
to be led in the perfect dance

A new tune, a new chance,
    a partner whose steps
    match her own…

But she knows now she is
    meant to dance alone...

    Her dreams washed away
    in sorrow, her lovely face
     etched with loss and regret
    she performs her lonely,
    last pirouette

    and quietly

                     exits the stage
